GREEN POINT BURIAL GROUNDS

After many years of archaeological work in the Green Point district of Cape Town, private companies and researchers have accumulated a large amount of historical archival material and information from archaeological excavations. Public interest in the burial grounds of Green Point was at its most intense in 2004 when the excavations at Prestwich Place were in progress, and largely due to the controversies around that site the material languished in files. Some years later it was decided to bring together the information about Prestwich, and to extend the ambit to include the history and archaeology of burials in the Green Point area as a whole. This has been made possible with financial support from the National Lotteries Commission and we can now share the findings.

On this website you will find various resources: photographs of sites and artefacts, maps and plans, historical and more recent documents, excavation reports and publications. You are welcome to take a journey through the past and the present of Green Point burial grounds.
